Juvenile Chipping Sparrow : I originally posted this as "Mystery Sparrow", but nine people have now assured me it is a juvenile Chipping Sparrow. That would be consistent with the adult Chipping Sparrow hanging around the same general area (though not specifically guarding the juvenile birds). Photos taken at Western Regional Park in Howard County, Maryland on July 30 at 8:10 am.

Satyrid Butterflies at Vantage Point : These photos were taken on July 4-5 along the Middle Patuxent River at Vantage Point in Columbia, Maryland. I now know how to tell the difference between an Appalachian Brown (or its northern cousin, the Eyed Brown) and a Northern Pearly-eye.

Common Moorhen at Centennial : This adult Common Moorhen in bright breeding color was at Centennial Lake in Howard County, Maryland in early May 2009. Photos were taken on May 6. The bird was very cooperative - it didn't seem to mind people looking at it and snapping pictures.
